American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification

Become a certified lifeguard and gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond when it matters most. The American Red Cross Lifeguarding course prepares participants to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies while providing professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) professionals take over.

This nationally recognized certification combines online learning with hands-on instruction to develop surveillance techniques, water rescue skills, CPR/AED
, First Aid, teamwork, and decision-making. Whether you're interested in a rewarding summer job or want to develop valuable leadership and lifesaving skills, this course provides the training employers expect.

Course Format

This course follows a blended learning model, combining approximately 7 hours of online coursework with 20 hours of instructor-led classroom and pool instruction.
All online coursework must be completed at least two (2) days prior to the first in-person class. The email address used during registration will be associated with your American Red Cross account. If you already have a Red Cross account, please register using the same email address. A personal email address (rather than a school or work email) is recommended.

Prerequisites

To enroll in the Lifeguarding course, participants must be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled class session and successfully complete the prerequisite swimming skills evaluation during the first class.

Prerequisite 1 – Swim, Tread, Swim

  • Jump into the water, fully submerge, resurface, and swim 150 yards continuously using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only.
  • Swim an additional 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
  • While swimming, participants must keep their face in the water and demonstrate good breath control. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are permitted for this prerequisite.

Prerequisite 2 – Timed Deep Water Retrieval

Complete the following sequence within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards (swim goggles are not permitted).
  • Surface dive (head-first or feet-first) to a depth of 7–10 feet and retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back, holding the object at the surface with both hands while keeping your face at or near the surface.
  • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Swimming the distance underwater is not permitted.

Certification Requirements

To earn American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification, participants must:
  • Successfully complete both prerequisite swim evaluations.
  • Complete all required online coursework prior to the first in-person class.
  • Attend 100% of all scheduled class sessions.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all required rescue skills and emergency response scenarios.
  • Successfully pass the written examination.

Important Information

Lifeguard training is physically demanding and requires active participation in swimming, rescue practice, and realistic emergency scenarios. Participants should be prepared to work both independently and as part of a team while developing the confidence and skills needed to respond in emergency situations.

Successful participants will earn an American Red Cross Lifeguarding
Certification, recognized nationwide and qualifying them for employment at pools, camps, beaches, and aquatic facilities.

This course follows a blended learning model, which combines online coursework with in-person sessions. All online coursework MUST be completed 2 days prior to the first class. The email provided upon registration will correlate with your red cross account. If you already have a Red Cross account, please provide the same email. It is recommended to use a personal email address (not school or work provided). 

Enrollment is limited to a minimum of 6 participants and a maximum of 10 participants to ensure individualized instruction and hands-on practice.
Course Fee: $325 (includes all instruction, online coursework, and American Red Cross certification).
